4:15a.m..........the phone rings and rings

I stumbled over to pick it up.....

Me: hello?

voice: Ms. Connally?

me: yes??

voice: This is the capital police.........

me: yes???

CP: We found your watch........

me: oh? Yes, I knew I had lost it up there......

CP: Well, we have it .......

me: Well......can you mail it to me??

CP: No, ...we can't.........

me: Well.......(pause)....do you know what time it is???....its 4:15a.m.!

CP: Yes, I know.......we can't mail it....its against the rules. You have to pick it up.

me: Well.....(laugh)......How did you get my watch anyway? I forgot to get it out of the plastic bag and then I threw the bag away in the trash can. How did you know it was my watch??

CP: We found it in bag. It was on the floor.

me: Look, its 4:15.am. and I'm not thinking very clearly ...can you call back later?

CP: Well....we just need to know if your coming to pick up the watch??

me: Its a 20 dollar watch! And I'm in Texas! Can I send someone over to get it?

CP: No, we can't release items to 3rd parties. Not unless you send us a notarized memo. Are you coming to get it?

me: I might...

CP: When?

me: I'll be there in June.....Can I get my lawyer to pick it up now?

CP: Well??.........let me go check...................(gone for some time)........

me: Geeze........................waiting.........

CP: We still need the notarized note.

Is your lawyer in Washington D.C.? me: Yes!! Look its 4:15a.m. and I'm not awake! Can I call you back??

CP: I might not be here...I'm in the field sometimes.

me: I'll risk it!! What is your name and your phone number?

CP: My name is Officer Banks, and my number is (202) 224-9801

me: I'll call you later about this.

I go back to bed.......pretty irritated.

4:30a.m....................the phone rings (again!)

me: Yes???

the same voice answers......Capital police again ma'mm.....

me: Yes??

CP: We decided you can have a 3rd party pick up your watch.

me: OK! I will do that.

CP: Good - we're just trying to take care of this. When can they pick up the watch?

me: Why don't I take your number and you tell me when YOU'RE asleep… and I'll call you about it??.....That ok????

CP: laugh.....oh, I can't do that!!....my shift is 6:30a.m. to 6:30a.m......anytime during my shift is fine.

me: Thanks!...hang up.......
