We Remember the Victims

Just because we oppose the death penalty, this does not mean that we do not share outrage at violent crimes. We also demand accountability and punishment. We are working toward a world without violence, where one day soon, our criminal justice system will focus more on restoration than retribution. To that end, we offer our statement on alternatives to the death penalty.

On behalf of everyone in the anti-death penalty movement, we at Citizens United for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the Abolitionist Action Committee offer the following:

Dear Compassionate Friends,

We are in profound sympathy with the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing, their families, and all who have been touched by this unconscionable act of violence and vengeance. At the same time, we are sorely aware of the distress of the family of Timothy McVeigh. As we stand at the prison in the hours before Timothy McVeigh is killed, we will participate in a circle of silent witness. This will begin at 4:12 am, 168 minutes before the scheduled execution time (7 am) -- 168, of course, being the number of people killed in the bombing.

As our government prepares to kill in our name and we fall silent, we will do so consciously and with intention. It will not be the silence of apathy or acquiescence, it will not be the silence of powerlessness and fear. It will be a silence expressing sorrow for those killed in the Oklahoma City bombing, for those injured, for the loved ones of the dead and injured; for the family of Timothy McVeigh, for those we ask to kill Timothy McVeigh, and yes, for Timothy McVeigh himself. We will reflect upon all the life and promise lost to the cycle of violence, rage, revenge, violence, rage, revenge..... It will be a silence that says that breaking that cycle is sometimes beyond slogans and words. It will be a silence of dissent. It will be a silence that says that we are witnessing, that our full attention is focused and we will not turn away from what happened in Oklahoma City and what is being done in retribution.

We remember the victims.

While we also remember all those touched by this tragic event, the following are the people who died in the bombing.
