Starvin' for Justice - 2005

The 12th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty
U.S. Supreme Court - Washington, DC
June 29th - July 2nd, 2005

Starvin' for Justice - 2005 is a four day vigil, which maintains a presence at the Supreme Court of the United States from June 29th to July 2, the dates of the Supreme Court Rulings which outlawed and then re-instated capital punishment in the United States. Some  participants fast during this time, but fasting is not required. We encounter thousands of visitors to the Court and share our message that no matter how you slice it, the death penalty is BAD PUBLIC POLICY. Much of the time is spent talking to individuals and creating visibility. Several larger events are held at key times during the event to highlight specific concerns, with a series of speakers each evening to educate, enlighten and entertain…

38 of 50 / Capital Embroidery

July 18th - 22nd, 2005

The Performance Sculpture of artist Randall Sinner

Artist Randall Sinner's exhibition 38 of 50 will be coming to
Charlottesville July 18th through the 22nd.

Sinner's work focus's directly upon the controversial issue of Capitol Punishment in America. Deemed Performance Sculpture, Sinner spent four years visiting and working in the 38 states which mandate the death penalty. Positioning himself at the respective Capitol's of each state, The artist; equipped with a table, flags, and simple implements would then perform his "Capital Embroidery".; Taking the 3-by-5 foot flags and tearing them into inch wide strips, he would then wrap the strips around a 50-foot rope and knot the length into a figure eight bundle. Sinner finished by taking the remenant thread and sewing it back through the white strip which once held the flag to the pole.

The process, both symbolic and involved, allowed for the artist to engage the public in direct dialogue concerning the issue and work at hand. Sinner's personal position remained ambiguous through out, opting to place the question and potential answers in the hands of the viewer.

An Exhibition and Public Reception for the artist will be held Friday July 22nd from 6-9 pm @ New Art Across the Bridge, located at 209 Monticello Rd. in Belmont. Between Spudnuts and Tara M's.

Less than a decade ago, we lacked members, muscle and momentum. But today, the death penalty abolition movement is achieving major wins in the courts and in the state capitals, and the American public is shifting to our side. If we are smart, use our resources wisely, and work together, we will abolish the death penalty in America.
If you're a Virginian planning on attending, please contact VADP.
